Andre and Daphne Leister won n remarkable 14 medals at the Goodwill Festival In Cape Town.
A
husband and wife from Frimley have returned from an International
martial arts festival in South Africa with an incredible 14 medals.
Daphne
and Andre Leister are Goju-Ryu experts and travelled to the Goodwill
Festival In Cape Town to take part in a weekend of classes and
competitions.
Both
Daphne and Andre gave up long-term jobs to pursue their passion for the
sport and were reworded with Impressive medal hauls.
Daphne,
a former senior manager at Frimley Park Hospital, won six golds and a
silver, while former electrical engineer Andre took four golds and three
bronze medals.
The
pair both entered seven different sections. four In karate and three in
kobudo, the art of weapons. The festival featured a total of 547
people.
Having
quit their jobs to take competing more seriously, the pair have since
travelled around the world to pursue their passion for Goju-Ryu. They
have visited South Africa, Singapore, China, Japan, Korea. Australia.
America and Canada.
Speaking
about their success, Daphne said: ''It was quite nerve-racking because
there were so many people there but there was a fantastic atmosphere and
a was a great feeling to win so many medals?.
Daphne and Andre also run classes to educate the next generation of martial arts competitors.
Their
club, Camberley Martial Arts, meets at Frimley Community Centre and
they are always keen to encourage new members, both children and adults.
Daphne
says the key disciplines are easy to pick up and learn. Site stumbled
across martial arts by accident while doing to a self-defence course at
Frimley park, while Andre became involved through the Duke of Edinburgh
award.
